The free Mardi Gras, part of the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, launches Edinburgh's Festival season with the sounds of New Orleans and trad styled jazz in the street.

In the past, the Jazz Festival's opening weekend event started with a Parade which saw performers dance from City Chambers, down Victoria Street, to the Old Town bars and cafes of the Grassmarket. The streets are still busy for the trad jazz flavoured sounds from the various stages, but the Mardi Gras is now more of a warm-up for the following day's Edinburgh Carnival, which includes a Parade down the Mound and music and dance in West Princes Street Gardens as well as a music, dance and carnival programme in the Grassmarket.

Bands performing in Edinburgh's Mardi Gras 2018 include:

  • Soul Brass Band (USA) - Traditional marching band
  • Kronendal Music Academy Jazz Band - ten young South African musicians
  • Hamlet - 5 young Aberdonians
  • The Vieux Carré Jazzmen and Shreveport Rhythm (Germany) - traditional jazz
  • Rumba de Bodas (Italy)
  • Brass Gumbo
  • Markus K (USA) - solo blues man
  • Becc Sanderson - Australian singer
