August

Diary: Saturday August 5th

Oot furra dauner, through the toun, picking up on the calm before the storm. The young hopeful luvvies makin' their way along the bridges, talking scripts an' technicals, heading fur that rourkes drift of venues, the Fringe Club.

I'll bet the the cooncil would like tae plug into the energy that abounds in the wonderful maelstrom that is the Fringe Club bars. It already lights up the city with the hope, enthusiasm and promise within the Alice in Wonderland that is the Festival. Guid luck tae them aw...

I underston' why the past Chief Steward, Hilary the Strong, brought the Fringe dates forward to give these wonderful young people another week in Wonderland before they return to their Shires.

Captured, by a local MacNeill:
"Aw haw, Fergie!" he greets me, oot a close in the High Street. "You're in ra press noo, wanny review oor show?"

"What's the show?" says I, "And whar's the venue?"

"Doon there...," he says, pointing tae the darkest, deepest part of the close.

"We're dain ae authentic Seventeenth Century Scottish mugging experience. It's caed 'High Street Close Shaves'."

Fixing me with his ye he goes oan: "We've goat a credit card oan-line payment system, fi ra provi, an tourist fowk on'y cairry oan them what they don't mind bein' mugged furr. But weil gi 'em an authentic traditional mugging. Wir naw in ra Fringe brochure, but, we're trying fur sponsorhip fae ra council, af'er aw wir in the same business."

Ah said, "aw ra best" and went in search of a wee goldie, to restore what sma sanity I had left.

rubbishAvoiding the skips an rubbish ootside that most illustrious temple of culture at the Official Festival, the Usher Hall (maybe it's naw rubbish, but a cooncil art installation), I just managed to find the front door of that most excellent venue, the Traverse. I obtained the necessary goldie and partial sanity.

Hamewurd, the morn's a day 'o' Pipers, fur a guid cause. Show the tartan, lads! Guid on ye!
