Shirin
Neshat: Work
If
you do not have at least 20 minutes, do not bother to go. However,
if you do have some time this is a worthwhile video exhibition. There
are two video shows, one downstairs (Turbulent) and one upstairs (Soliloquy).
Shirin is an Iranian woman who went to America when she was 17 to
study art.
While she was away the revolution took place and she did not return
till 1990, and now makes annual visits. The works on display have
resulted from reflections on her feelings of profound dislocation,
living between two cultures and meditations on universal themes of
gender, sexuality and cultural identity.
Without wanting to give the plots away, she attempts to say a lot
with very little. She uses split screens to convey the schism, and
unlike many modern videos, as well as the emotional message, the images
are visually very strong and engaging.
