Exhibition by Irene Halliday and Enid Foot Watts
"Still
Life for a Sea Shore" by Irene Halliday is almost two pictures. A
romantic seashore softly coloured in hues of red and blue, is divided
by a straight strip across the canvas on which there is a still life
of four sailing boats of varying sizes. This is obviously the focal
point of the painting and takes it from being merely a pretty picture
to an interesting one.
Enid
Foot Watts "Hills from Balfron" is in stark contrast. Watts paints
with a rich palette of glowing autumn shades and depicts a rolling
landscape with hills in the distance and impressions of trees in the
foreground and centre. The painting stands out because of the intensity
of colour, and one can see why Enid has been referred to as a romantic
colourist by many critics.
As an added
bonus, this Gallery is showing some very attractive jewellery by Sheana
M. Stephen. Out of a total of 114 pieces, two that particularly caught
my eye were "Sea Spray" - an amazonite, silver and gold-frosted necklace
and eardrops, and "Boulders" - reticulated silver, gold and amethyst
brooch pendant with detachable boulders of amethyst. Colourful, bold,
with lots of unsual, even primitive designs - not your typical exhibition
of precious rocks.
The
Time - 14th August - 2nd September Mon.-Sat. 11-6.
