The Exhibition The Surrealist and the Photographer

The Place
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and Dean Gallery

The Blurb By combining these exhibitions in the neighbouring Modern Art and Dean galleries, the curators draw links between the work of husband and wife, Lee Miller (photographer) and Roland Penrose (artist, collector, writer, and tireless promoter of 20th C modern art). This is not a criticism, but it has not been done with the ease of the viewer in mind.

In the Dean Gallery, there is a video of Penrose's life and works, of which is worth catching at least a snippet. However, the work of other artists in his collection, such as Picasso, Dali, Miro, Ernst and Braque, is mixed in the exhibition with his own work.

He has produced some interesting work, some more affiliated to Pop Art than Surrealism. His collages and drawings are more impressive than his paintings and the influence of the other, better-known, artists, who were also his (and Miller's) friends, is obvious. He is not an outstanding artist in my mind, but through his activities he brought Surrealism to Britain. As a combination, these exhibitions are worth a visit, if only to see Paolozzi's two-story high statue of Vulcan, and if you are getting a little foot-weary, these are the only two venues where you can actually park your car.

The Time Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00hrs, Sunday 11:00-18:00hrs. Till 9th Sept

The Cost £4 (£2.50 concession) joint admission. Or £10 (£6) for entry to these galleries and Portrait Gallery and National Gallery with repeated entry till end of the current exhibitions.
