The Exhibition Sean Scully

The Place
The Ingleby Gallery, 6 Carlton Terrace

The Blurb The Ingleby gallery is known for hosting renowned artists, and this is no exception. Sean Scully, though originally from Dublin, follows naturally on from the American Abstract Expressionists such as Mark Rothko and de Kooning. His work is almost entirely made up of rectangles and squares; juxtaposed, inserted and overlaid. I found the oil paintings less colourful and less exciting than Rothko's, though the scale in some cases is impressive. However, his pastels and watercolours were very delicate with gentle nuances of gradation from one patch of colour to the next and these did impress me considerably.

If you do not like Rothko, give this a miss, if you do, it is worth a visit.
