Black Light Theatre of Prague Presents Aspects of Alice (page 10)
Drams for those of an age, coke for those who aren’t!
Venue Pleasance Courtyard & Over the Road (Venue 33)
Address 60 The Pleasance
Reviewer Annabel Ingram

Having seen this company’s other show a few days before (Gulliver) I was worried that as another black light show it would have little more to offer. Happily all my fears were cast aside as every child in the auditorium, from 3 years old to 80, were held enthralled by this versatile and talented company. Black Light theatre uses a combination of techniques such as projections, flying, props handled by actors ‘hidden’ all in black and live music to create a number of illusions.

Aspects of Alice takes Lewis Carroll’s creation and follows her through the looking glass one last time, this time encountering the trials of hormone addled adolescence. The highlights of the show for me were the classic clowning performances and the flying by Alice as she soared high over old Prague. As an example of the magic you can create very simply in theatre this is a masterclass. An excellent show for the family outing, this is suited to a younger age group than Gulliver.

Something Else (page 13)
Drams None
Venue C too (Venue 4 )
Address S Columba's by the Castle, Johnston Terrace
Reviewer Thelma Good

Something Else just can't fit in when he goes down to the Town of Here and There. He has his bear Kevin to hug, but the hip-hop rabbits and the gaudy French parrots all delight in making Something Else feel out of place. Then Something turns up and things take a turn for the better. With Toby Mitchell as the Narrator, Sharon Morwood as Something Else, Angela Laverick as Something and the brighty coloured set reflecting the oringinal storybook illustrations it does feel as though a fairy Gomother has waved her wand and ting! - the story has come to life.

Produced by Tall Stories in their engaging positive style, this show for children leaves children and adults alike with the warm glow of a good pacy story dramatised with spirit and flair. This and their earlier production, The Gruffalo are worth seeking out on their tours. And be prepared to buy the books they are based on if you take a small friend or three!

Marc Pencak's show involves puppets which resemble cute Voodoo dolls and a whole load more dead dinky day-glo special effects. It is genuinely scary, but in a lingering rather than a cathartic way. More a mad babysitter than a daddy figure; imagine Strewelpeter meets 'Where The Wild Things Are' and you're half way there. The anecdotes about an older, disaster prone half brother he tells in this one man show are cautionary tales told from a child's and not an adult's perspective.

The show is marred by the tiny, hot room in which it is performed . This is partly due to the stage lights but it's tropical outside too. For optimum enjoyment you'd be advised to sit at the sides where the electric fans are, as I've discovered watching several shows here. Poor Marc nearly brains himself on his own wee lighting rig at least twice.

The kids in the crowd today don't seem at all frightened or bored and they are mostly at least a couple of years younger than the recommended age of eight, however some of the material in the show might disturb adults. The half brother runs away from home at the end of the story and, as a mum, I'm afraid I found that upsetting. Sorry if that disclosure has spoilt it for any kids reading this review, but a missing child is any parent's nightmare.

Runs until 26th Aug. £5/3. 3:30-4:45pm.

Outside there's a merry-go-round, two circus tents and two caravans, one the theatre directors, Thierry Dupre and Sonia Ildei, home with windows as well as a door. Theatre Du Risorus have brought two shows this year and other companies also use their spaces. It's a magical corner and through the caravan with just a door is a tiny theatre where seated in the dark, soon a baby fox is sleep, his little furry tail pocking out of his little suited form.

In Theatre du Risorus's tale of Volpino this little fox is given a little rabbit to eat wearing a little coat. Hs father gives him a little talk on the anatomy of a rabbit and telling him about his forebearer who kept the rabbits down at the Somme in 1917, then goes off leaving his son to eat. But when he starts on his meal it moves and the two young animals scared at first begin to play. Full of frolics, the two wander off to have fun in the forrest, and in the farmyard - watch out for the bloomer clothed hens! All the various puppets are beautifully made and moved with bags of personality. I particularily liked Mummy Rabbit with her long ears and "Oh my Goodness" expression. They speak easily followed gobbledegock supplied by Thierry, who is their sole mover, his tiny theatre has more surprises than many a full sized one.

Everything makes for a magical experience for all, just take something soft to put on the wooden board bench, an adult for instance!
