Reviewer Sarah Jane Murray.

Benjamin Saar died of AIDS before he was 10 years old. His father – David Saar – wrote this play to illustrate the journey of him and his family, from his son’s birth to his death. While this is clearly intensely traumatic subject-matter, Saar has bravely and admirably created a piece of theatre in which consciousness-raising is the main goal, rather than simply public grieving.

The power of this piece lies not in its dramaturgy or its execution. The play relies on cliché-ridden design and stock dialogue. Dancers flailing brightly coloured banners representing differing emotions look like rejects from the Olympian opening ceremony, and actors talking in unison is uninspired. And – although Shana Cochran as Benjamin slides relatively comfortably into the role – watching a teenager playing a young child is never a particularly appealing prospect.

Rather, the play’s strong points are in the writing. A highly personal account of this tragedy allows the audience to participate in the frustration, confusion and sadness fuelled by such unique circumstances. Unfortunately, this narrative realism jars with the forced expressiveness of the dramaturgy. The company could have evoked enough feeling through the live music alone – gently percussive rhythms respond sensitively to the events onstage.

A poetic, undemanding and moving play, flawed by an unnecessarily clumsy performance.
