Rating Guide Drams Venue Rocket at Demarco Roxy Art House (Venue 115). Address Roxburgh Place. Reviewer Ritchie Smith. I've always wanted to see a production of Sondheim's Assassins, and Edinburgh gave me my chance. Assassins is a song and dance show about American assassins - and, by extension, America itself - who want to 'kill the President'. This version was of course a little rough around the edges, but I want to praise the young cast, who had obviously rehearsed professionally and hit (in every sense) the right notes. This is after all a difficult and adult work, with a hard balance to find between the dark and the comic. But this cast made it enjoyable and, in the scene where poor sad screwed-up Lee Harvey Oswald is persuaded to shoot JFK, they touched genuine pathos. The singing was perhaps rather better than the acting, but I was entertained throughout, and two of the cast in particular managed to bring gravity and threat to their roles - Ananth Gopal as John Wilkes Boothe, and Adam McEvoy as Guiseppe Zangara. ©Ritchie Smith, 12 August 2006 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com .
