Rating Guide Drams . Venue C Venues Cabaret Bar. (Venue 54). Address Carlton Hotel, North Bridge. Reviewer Vivien Devlin. Born into a family of Hollywood stars, (daughter of the legendary Judy Garland and director Vincent Minnelli), the vivacious, wide eyed, deep voiced Liza Minnelli, quickly shot to fame as a multi award winning actress and singer, receiving an Oscar for her inimitable performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. In this sparkling, bright and bold impersonation, New York singer, Rick Skye brings the older, wiser, Liza back to the stage, in a brilliant portrayal - the black sequined dress, the legs, the voice, the songs - all spiced up with moments of outrageous parody. This is neither a tribute show nor a send up. This is Liza in a cabaret show today, describing the ups and downs of her life: three marriages, drink, drugs, the ghost of Judy Garland and the glittering success of her career. She reminisces with sardonic, self-depracating humour, through story and song with amusing new lyrics added to familiar tunes. While the medley of re-worded Aznavour songs don't quite hit the mark, a scene with Liza wheeling around on "Mein Chair" is witty and hilarious. The show relies a bit too much on humour and more of the bittersweet, tear-jerking charm captured in "Over the Rainbow" would add a touch of quality and depth. With Michael Ferreri accompanying on the piano, Rick Skye captures the heart and soul of Liza through many classic numbers, Cabaret, New York New York, Maybe this Time . On a subtly lit stage, observe the face and listen to that voice - at times it's utterly convincing. In New York A Slice o' Minnelli won the 2006 Mac (Manhattan Cabaret) award for Best Impersonator. No wonder. ŠVivien Devlin, 4 August 2006 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Runs to August 28 at 7.20pm every day. Company -Rick Skye Productions. Company Website - www.rickskye.com
