The official festival was launched in in 1947 as a stage for peace and unity in Europe after the Second World War. Since then it has become dwarfed by the other festivals that have sprung up around it, in particular the Festival Fringe. However, as in previous years, the programme still includes some of the world's best opera, theatre, and ballet companies.
