The Exhibition Art in the City
The Place City Art Centre, 2 Market Street
The Blurb This is an exhibition about Edinburgh
portrayed by mostly Scottish artists, but also by some visiting artists;
the Surrealist, Man Ray, has a delicate drawing of the Castle and
Esplanade. On show are sculpture, architectural drawings, photography
and paintings.
From the contemporary Scottish artists, there is a splendid statue
of a horse's head by, Paolozzi; photomontage by Calum Colvin; delicate
Japanese still life by Elizabeth Blackadder; also work by Barbara
Rae and Victoria Crowe. Earlier Scottish artists contributions include
portraits by Raeburn, and still life by Cadell. Many paintings show
the easily recognisable Edinburgh silhouettes, some 'mist, rain and
blown grey days'. On a wet day, this is a very comfortable way to
sightsee!
The Time Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00hrs, Sun 10:00-17:00hrs. Til 6th

The Exhibition Sir William Allan, Artist Adventure
The Place City Art Centre, 2 Market Street
The Blurb Allan was principally a painter of pastoral landscapes, people he had encountered, and subjects drawn from Scottish history and Scottish novels. He developed his own style of genre painting. His paintings tell the viewer a story - sometimes very dramatically like 'The Murder of David Rizzio', depicting Mary Queen of Scots standing over her dead lover, or with informal sensitivity, like the portrait of Mathew Hardie, the Scottish 'Stradivara' violin maker. At the same time you might learn a bit of history.
The Time Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00hrs, Sun 10:00-17:00hrs. Till
6th October.

The Exhibition This Earth for Us (Australia dreaming)
The Place City Art Centre, 2 Market Street
The Blurb This exhibition celebrates the
life and art of Australian Aboriginals, and their spiritual attachment
to the land. It is splendid for children as there are lots of question
and answer activities, and a video. It is also not too large to bore
or tire any one and lots of colourful dotty aboriginal paintings,
textiles, pots, even glass artefacts. A very pleasurable way to learn.
The Time Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00hrs, Sun 10:00-17:00hrs. Till
6th October.
The Cost: free.
