The Blurb
A huge blown-up photograph of Lee Miller's half nude torso is the first thing you notice. Not only was she an outstanding photographer, she was also a great beauty, whose friends, lovers and subjects included many of the most brilliant artists and writers of her time.
Together with Man Ray, the surrealist artist and photographer, Miller experimented with solarised double exposure technique, a cross between a photograph and negative to great effect.
Although she modelled and took photographs for Vogue and other magazines, she is probably best known for her extensive coverage of the war years, where she came into her own as a photojournalist. In the first hall, you find the same model military jeep that she travelled in, with her typewriter and her uniform.
In the series of war photos, her images of the concentration camps are particularly harrowing. This is definitely, to my mind, one of the most interesting exhibitions in Edinburgh this year, and brings to life this extraordinary woman. A must.
