The Exhibition Rembrandt's women
The Place The National Gallery of Scotland, The Mound
The Blurb
This exhibition shows over 120 works borrowed from over 40 collections world-wide.
It is unique. The subject matter is women; in finery to nude, regal to informal poses, young to old, and even some rather subtle erotic ones.
The paintings are magnificent with Rembrandt's wonderful capture of light and dark and richness of texture, and his sympathetic handling of the subject matter. There are many pastels and drawings. Many are very delicate with a few masterful strokes achieving what normal mortals can not achieve with many.
However, I was most surprised to realise that he was fallible. One drawing, in particular, of an infant had his upper limbs completely out of proportion.
His sensitive handling of old women is without parallel in my opinion. It is well worth a visit. The Gallery has many other artists on display which you can peruse at no cost.
The Time Mon-Sat 10:00-18:00hrs, Sun 11:00-18:00hrs. Till 2nd September
The Cost Rembrandt's women £6:00, concessions £3:50. Otherwise free.
