Edinburgh Fringe Society to give the public say in updating constitution

Festival Fringe Society opens online review, the biggest arts consultation ever carried out. Open to all, the results of the survey will feed into how the society's board goes about updating the constitution of the festival for a 21st century audience.

Chief Executive Kath M Mainland commented;

"The Festival Fringe Society is modernising its constitution and the comments and feedback the online survey generates will be key in shaping this review. Anyone can contribute their views; from those that have never seen a Fringe show through to the performers, venues and general public that come to the Fringe year in year out.

"The working group are convinced that the founding core objectives of the Fringe Society are as relevant today as they were in 1969. Any constitutional changes should enhance this work not detract from it."

The survey will be open until 31st October - which will then see a series of meetings in which the special working group will discuss findings.

- At the 2008 AGM, the Society's board gave a commitment to review the constitution.

- The special working group was created at the AGM during August 2009, established with a remit of creating a special review process. The group has extensive plans to review the Fringe Society constitution, by consulting the Fringe's stakeholders ahead of a new constitution coming into effect for next year.

- The Constitutional Review Working Group consists of Simon Fanshawe, Tommy Sheppard, Pip Utton (Vice Chair of the Society), Charlie Wood and Colin Wood.

- The Festival Fringe 2009 sold 1,859,235 tickets - 9% more than the previous record set in 2007. The 2,098 shows in the 2009 programme took place in 265 venues across Edinburgh.
