EDINBURGH-BASED MEDICAL STUDENT WINS NATIONAL

PHOTOGRAPHIC COMMISSION WORTH £3,000

An Edinburgh-based medical student training to become a military doctor has scooped a professional commission from Insight Guides worth £3,000 in its annual travel photography competition.  Now in his last year, David Hall, the 25-year old photography lover doesn't see any problem arranging a couple of weeks in civvies to take up his first prize to contribute to Insight Guides' photo-rich guide books.  Of the win, David said, "I've been into photography since travelling around India on my gap year and this award will allow me to spend time doing something I really enjoy, while also giving me the opportunity of seeing my work published."

The competition invited both professional and amateur photographers to submit three images that capture the essence of a destination, using ‘water' as the theme, with the entries judged by an expert panel made up of the picture editors of both the Independent on Sunday and Insight Guides, and a former Trustee of the Royal Photographic Society.

Kevin Jones of Insight Guides said, "The standard of entries this year was the highest it has ever been and it was great to see three such strong and varied images from David Hall."  The winning pictures (shown here) were as follows: a red truck in the Salar de Uyuni, a high-altitude salt-desert in south-western Bolivia; women in the paddy field taken in Si Phan Don, Laos; and boy on the beach in Cox's Bazaar, Bangladesh - a town and fishing port known for having the longest natural sandy sea beach.
