PRESS RELEASE JUNE 17, 2008

FAMILIES AND RACING FANS FLOCK TO SHEEP RACES AT LOTHIAN RACECOURSE

Punters who flock to Musselburgh Racecourse will be treated to sheep races as part of a race night in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The East Lothian course has thrown their weight behind the cancer charity to raise awareness and much needed funds at the Macmillan Cancer Support Racenight on Monday 30 June.

With an expected crowd of around 4000, Musselburgh are donating £1 for every punter through the gates. The gate money will be boosted with collections and a grand prize draw.

In addition to six flat horse races, a Haddington farmer is supplying some of his flock to take part in a unique sheep race. Other attractions include a county food fayre featuring some of East Lothian's best produce. It will be a great day for all the family, and kids under 16 who are accompanied by an adult will get in for free.

It's the first time Musselburgh Racecourse has supported a nominated charity. The racecourse decided to back Macmillan was taken because all proceeds will help local families.

Macmillan fundraiser for Musselburgh area, Fiona Leitch, said: "It will be a really enjoyable night out for all the family. There will be six flat races for those who enjoy serious racing, while I'm sure the sheep races will keep children and families entertained.

"There will also be lots of interesting stalls and prizes draws, along with the usual touches of glamour that you always get at such a lovely location as Musselburgh.

"We are hoping to get around 4000 attending and the more people who come to our race night, the more money we'll be able to put into vital services for people affected by cancer."

Musselburgh Racecourse commercial manager, Claire Sheppard, said: "It's the first time we've supported a charity to this extent and we've done so because it will have a direct impact on East Lothian families who face the daily struggle of living with cancer.

"We're delighted to team up with Macmillan Cancer Support. We are donating £1 for ever person through the gates and we hope all our generous customers will show their support by digging deep on the night."

Gates open on Monday 30 June at 4.30pm and the first race is at 6.55pm, tickets cost £15 (£13 if booked in advance). For more information contact Fiona Leitch on 01899 229059 or email fleitch@macmillan.org.uk, call Musselburgh Racecourse on 0131 665 2859 or visit www.musselburgh-racecourse.co.uk
