Thousands of free tickets to historic visitor attractions from the Border Abbeys to Skara Brae and Maeshowe in Orkney are being given away to celebrate St Andrew's Day.

Historic Environment Scotland (HES), the government conservation agency, will be giving away free tickets to some of the most famous sites in Scotland on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 November, as part of the build-up to this year’s St Andrew’s Day celebrations.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland's top paid visitor attraction, and Craigmillar Castle, which features in the upcoming Netflix epic Outlaw King, are among the venues that are taking part in the promotion.

Blackness, Dirleton and Tantallon Castle along with Linlithgow Palace are also among the 35 attractions with free tickets.

Online registration for free tickets is open til 5pm on Friday 23 November.

Ticket Giveaway is part of the Scottish Government’s Winter Festivals which kicks off with St Andrew’s Day and carries through Christmas and Hogmanay and up until Burns Night.
