Today marks the programme launch for the 30th edition of the Edinburgh International Children's Festival, produced by Imaginate, Scotland's national organisation promoting the development and education of theatre and dance for young people.

“Our 30th anniversary programme promises to be another spectacular one for the Festival,” said Festival Director Noel Jordan. “This year, families in Scotland will again have a unique opportunity to see some of the world’s best theatre and dance specifically created for young people. You can go on a voyage from a retro kitchen into outer space with the first female astronaut, or marvel at the determination of triplet sisters as they journey separately around the globe. Whatever your choice, you can be confident the shows will be diverse, compelling and visually stunning. Shows that will make children laugh, gasp and cry while encouraging them to be critical thinkers with curious minds."

This year's programme features 15 productions from 8 countries throughout Europe and beyond. Promising to be visually stunning and engaging, the programme features spectaculars that range from an acrobatic circus for toddlers (Three Legs) to intergalactic adventures (Valentina's Galaxy) to interactive and sensory-based theatre and dance.

Fiona Hyslop, the Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Tourism and External Affairs, has remarked,
“Research has provided strong evidence on the value of young people engaging with culture from an early age, and Imaginate is playing a vital role in ensuring our young people can continue to engage with the arts," adding that the Scottish government is proud to support this initiative, even kicking off the festival with a Family Day at the National Museum of Scotland, complete with free drop-in events that include live music, storytelling and hands-on activities.

Programme highlights include:
Nero, a sensory story about darkness

Mappamondo, a playful journey across Earth mixing natural sounds and movement to create a world of colours and sounds

New Owner, a combination of live action, animation and puppetry which sensitively explores loss and new beginnings

Small Wonders, an awe-inspiring and interactive theatrical journey with a miniaturist from Punchdrunk
