2018 Sees Return of War Horse to Festival Theatre

By Irene Brown - Posted on 29 August 2016

Following its completely sold run of 31 performances in January 2014, the National Theatre’s award-winning sensational production of Michael Morpurgo’s WW1 story War Horse returns to the Festival Theatre Edinburgh (FTE) in 2018.

Seen by over 55,000 people, War Horse remains the highest grossing show in the theatre’s 20-year history and bringing of huge scale ambitious productions to Scotland strengthens the relationship between FTE and the National Theatre that has established a style of ‘event theatre’ shows not usually seen outside of the Edinburgh International Festival.

War Horse, the most successful play in the National Theatre’s history, has been seen by over seven million people worldwide and has won 25 awards including the Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway. The story of courage, loyalty and friendship between a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey is set against the backdrop of the First World War and features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings horses believably to life on stage.
Since its its world premiere in 2007, War Horse, has been seen in 97 cities in 10 countries, including productions on Broadway, Toronto and Berlin, with touring productions in the UK and Ireland, North America, the Netherlands and Belgium and a Chinese-language production is currently running in Beijing.

Author Michael Morpurgo said, “After a few months’ rest, out at pasture, Joey, the War Horse and his great team from the National Theatre, will be touring the UK again, from 2017 through to 2018 and the centenary of the end of the First World War, taking their show all over the country, to towns and cities, many of them places War Horse, has not been seen before. I am so pleased this is happening; that so many more people will have the chance to enjoy this unique theatrical event. Steady boy, steady Joey. Trot on!”
