As part of this year’s Black History Month, producer Neo Vilakazi brings an authentic representation of Africa to the UK’s stages and screens with Shona The Musical.
Based on historical events, Shona The Musical is a cross-cultural love story set amongst the ruins of a country in turmoil that transcends racial barriers.
Based around the marriage of a Zimbabwean Chief Sabelo to his Scottish bride Joanne, Shona The Musical chronicles the couple’s resilience against xenophobic, corrupt politicians and officials bringing turmoil to the all races of the population.
The intense musical score from writer, composer, and producer Neo Vilakazi, is based on the traditional music and dance of the Shona ethnic group from across Southern Africa. Vilakazi has developed an authentic story from an African worldview. He says, “Africa needs a voice on the international stage. I hate the fact that other people get to define what Africa is and who Africans are. I am tired of Hollywood’s version, it’s time we told our own stories.”
