Snowvember in Edinburgh Brings Traffic Delays and Closures

The wintry Christmas weather has come early to Edinburgh and across Scotland, although travellers will not be feeling cheered by the blizzard conditions.

Many roads in Edinburgh and across Scotland are unpassable, trains have been delayed, and Edinburgh airport is closed.

Edinburgh City Council announced this morning that all Edinburgh schools are closed today.

Even major roads like the Edinburgh City bypass are still covered in snow in parts and the M8 is down to one lane with queuing traffic due to the bad conditions and accidents.

Edinburgh Airport is closed due to the heavy snowfall and is expected to open at the earliest at 10am. Glasgow airport was closed earlier, but has re-opened, although some delays are expected.

Scotrail also advised that many routes are experiencing delays and disruptions.

The Edinburgh to Queen Street railway line was closed at 7am due to an obstruction on the track at Linlithgow. A reduced service will be operating every half hour between Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley until 7pm when normal service is expected to resume.

Among events that have been hit was yesterday's celebrations to mark St Andrew's Day in St Andrew Square, which were cancelled due to too much snow.

Organisers also had to cancel the Nativity Carol Concert, scheduled for 4pm in St Andrew Square, due to heavy snow.
