Vegetarian Restaurants

• Henderson's Bistro Bar and Henderson's Salad Bar Edinburgh's long-established, and popular vegetarian food spots offer a good selection of buffet style vegetarian and vegan food in the Edinburgh New Town area.
• The Forest Not just a veggie restaurant but hub for Edinburgh's activists, artists and free-thinkers. Live bands regularly, extensive range of sandwiches and nicely priced main dishes.
• David Bann Vegetarian Restaurant and Bar Upmarket vegetarian cuisine in Edinburgh Old Town area.
• Black Bo's The traditional decor belies a trendy, bohemian vibe at this restaurant and bar off Edinburgh's Royal Mile. Edinburgh vegetarian food at its most experimental (which probably isn't saying a great deal).
• The Engine Shed, 19 St Leonard's Lane, Edinburgh, EH10 4EQ (0131 662 0040) Wholesome veggie nosh in a pleasent, modern building. Low prices on weekdays as the restaurant is subsidised. Run by the Garvald Charity for people with learning disabilities.
• Susie's Wholefood Diner, 51 West Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9DB (0131 667 8729) Vegetarian food in heart of Edinburgh's student quarter at 51-53 West Nicolson st. Fill up on a variety of pure vegetarian dishes.
• Cockburn St Baked Potato Shop, 56 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1PB (0131 225 7572). Cheap and cheerful veggie food in a tattie. Late-opening the baked potato shop is at top of Cockburn St, just off Edinburgh's Royal Mile. Very limited seating area.
• Kalpna Very tasty vegetarian curries and indian food, although on the rich side. Ambience is somewhat lacking.

Vegetarian food on the menu

• Valvona & Crolla Caffe Bar The upmarket Italian deli has become an Edinburgh foodlovers' institution and the Caffe Bar's traditional Italian fare usually has something for even discerning vegetarians. Situated at the top of Leith Walk, on Elm Row, it is open morning to evening and serves dinner only during the Edinburgh Festival.
• Skippers One for pesco-vegetarians - bistro specialising in fishy foods.
