The widget tied to this pole, about 8 feet up, is apparently recording air pollution in Edinburgh's Queen Street (west end). Critics say it is too high to give an accurate reading of pollutants from exhaust pipes.

The City of Edinburgh Council say that they have to place the tubes at this height because of vandalism, however, as NO2 gas and particulates are heavier than air the measurements are bound to be wrong - plain and simple! Added to which if you live in the New Town of Edinburgh on the hillside you may well have up to three floors below street level. Therefore if you live in the New Town, the thing to remember is not to open your windows at night near the road, or you and your children will be subject to increasing exposure to noxious gas courtesy of the traffic diversions due to the tram project.
