  • Royal Botanic Garden A verdant oasis in the heart of Edinburgh and Scotland's answer to Kew gardens is a great place to learn about exotic flora, and wile away a sunny afternoon.
  • Water of Leith Conservation Society Designated an Urban Wildlife Site by the City of Edinburgh Council, this 35km long wildlife corridor, which passes through the heart of Edinburgh, is home to foxes, deer, seals, stoats, weasels, herons, kestrels, pheasants and more. The WLCS is a registered charity involved in education (including through a visitor centre) and conservation.

  • Scottish National Heritage Government-funded environmental think-tank with head office in Edinburgh. Documents Scotland's natural history and researches "sustainable" development and conservation for the future, whether that be tourism or parks management.
  • Carrifran Wildwood Project As much as two thirds of Scotland was once covered in woodland: deciduous forest in the South and Scots pinewoods as you move North. Now, less than half a percent of the indigenous forest remains (fast-growing imports have superceded native tree species for use in the pulp and paper industry). This ambitous project South of Edinburgh aims to nurture the forest back to what it was before we cut most of it down.
