For those awake, here's some events - all of which happen to revolve around the big, blustery expanse of Holyrood Park - to blow out the cob webs on New Year's Day.

THE ONE’ O CLOCK RUN, Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, 1-3pm
A gentle one mile fun run open to all. Check in at Edinburgh Castle Esplanade before the run at 1pm. Entry £10, early booking advised. Participants, many in fancy dress, will be set on their way by Edinburgh’s famous One O’ Clock Gun following a route from Edinburgh Castle, down the Royal Mile, past Holyrood Palace to the finish line in Holyrood Park.

EDINBURGH'S DOGMANAY 1.30-4pm, Holyrood Park
The Sled Dog Races is a family favourite featuring Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed and Siberian Huskies teaming up for dog sled races through Holyrood Park.

IRON KIDS DUATHOLON
Run-bike competition designed for 8-15 year olds. Starting in Holyrood Park at 11.30am, the competition includes a 600m run, 2 mile cycle and another 600m run.

EDINBURGH BICYCLE TRIATHLON
Competitors swim eight lengths of the Royal Commonwealth Pool (400m), cycle three times round Arthur’s Seat (11miles) then run once round Arthur’s Seat (3.5 miles). Almost a third of participants are first-timers, but for many it's a competitive test of winter fitness. Registration is now closed but spectators are encouraged to come along and support. 12.30pm start in Holyrood Park.

The LOONY DOOK, South Queensferry, 11am-1pm.
The brave and the bold throw caution to the wind and themselves into the icy waters of the Firth of Forth (Sunday 1 January).
