The council has been prepping the public for road closures during Edinburgh's five-day Hogmanay Festival.

 Roads will be closed in advance (see details below) and the council warns: "Vehicles should not be parked within restrictions. All offending vehicles will be removed and may be subject to a parking fine and impound charges."

RBS To Provide Free Bus Service On Hogmanay

Free buses will be laid on again this year for revellers attending Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations.

Between 23:45 and 04:30 over 150 buses will take approximately 25,000 passengers home, clocking up a total mileage of 8,000 miles and saving party-goers £100,000.

A new late night service from Glasgow Central to Edinburgh will be launched on 18 December.

The Friday "night" service will leave Glasgow Central at six minutes after midnight - which is some 36 minutes later than the last train to Edinburgh Waverley from Glasgow Queen Street.

The Street Party is perhaps the best-known event in Edinburgh's Hogmanay Festival calendar. The New Year street party takes place the length of Princes Street, with live bands, dancing in the street, and street theatre troupes mingling with crowds.

The New Year Sprint

This is the first day of the New Year Sprint in Musselburgh. The New Year Sprint is an open 110m race that has taken place around New Year's Day annually since 1870. Professional and amateur sprinters compete in this the 141st meeting, for a £4000 first prize.
