Over 160,000 visitors are expected to attend the four-day annual trade show for those involved in the farming, food, and countryside sectors. Huge numbers of different classes of pigs, cows, horses, and other livestock are on parade as well as farm machinery and locally grown produce. There's also a broad range of events for the lay person, with culinary demos in the Food Hall being one of the big draws.

The Scotland Food & Drink Theatre at the Royal Highland Show will stage nine demonstration sessions daily over the four days of the show this year. The theme of the food and drink industry showcase, which is under the supervision of writer-broadcaster Wendy Barrie, is “A Celebration of Scotland”.

Being a port city Edinburgh has a thriving inland gull population. Gulls, and other urban foragers such as dogs, cats, foxes, and crows, often tear through thin rubbish bag-liners left for collection on city pavements in search of food scraps. Not only does food end up on the pavement but, with Edinburgh being a windy city, the rubbish is easily dispersed throughout the surrounding street.

The programme for 2012 has still to be announced but expect over 200 educational and interactive activities for the wee ones, and lectures and talks for older heads in 40 or so venues across town.

Kerbside Pick-up for Batteries and Bottles Introduced

Edinburgh residents can now recycle plastic bottles and old batteries using the council's kerbside pick-up. From this Monday, 31 January, plastic bottles will be picked up from the red kerbside boxes while batteries will be picked up from the blue kerbside boxes for recycling.

It may not feel like Spring, but for gardeners the growing season is almost upon us. It means that garden waste collections become fortnightly from March. To mark the occasion the City of Edinburgh Council has been giving away free bags of compost made from recycled garden waste. The first giveaway was yesterday at Fox Covert Primary School in Corstorphine, with further compost give-aways planned today and later.
