About the venue

Edinburgh's historic Craigmillar Castle, famous as the location of plot and intrigue. The well-preserved ruin includes a tower house, courtyard and gardens.

Craigmillar village itself dates back to the early 12th century. The Gothic-looking castle was built by extremely wealthy merchant family, the Prestons around 1374. The Preston family were strongly linked to the Royal Stuart dynasty  from King James III through to King James VI/I.  Mary Queen of Scots frequented the castle throughout her reign and the plot to kill her husband, Lord Darnley was hatched here.

The castle interior is linked by a broad spiral staircase that connects the three floors of the castle inside.

You can get most of the way to the castle along the Innocent cycle path.
