About the venue

The oldest Custom House in Scotland, this distinctive neoclassical building in Leith was designed by Robert Reid and built between 1810 and 1812, with alterations in 1825 by William Burns. It was built as an administrative centre for the collection of dues on goods traded through the Port of Leith.

In 2015, the City of Edinburgh Council bought Custom House and leases it to Scottish Historic Buildings Trust who provide studio space for artists and creatives as well as meeting and community spaces. Prior to this the building had been underused for 30 years (National Museums of Scotland had used it for storage) and it required repair.

In Custom Lane, you can find a coffee shop, gentlemen’s outfitter, gallery and community space and the Edinburgh Tool Library.

Leith Market takes place on Saturdays in the adjacent car park.
