Gluten intolerance or not, a lovely place to go and eat.

To mark this year’s Coeliac Awareness Week, which runs from 16 to 22 May 2011, Adele’s Café in Fountainbridge (run by my daughter-in-law!) is offering a chance to win a gluten- free high/afternoon tea for 2. All you need to do is drop a gluten-free recipe inside the café (attractive pot provided!) and you’ll be entered in to the draw.

The idea behind this is “...to get people thinking about the gluten-free diet and help them understand what it is like to live with coeliac disease.”(Coeliac Society UK) One of the many ideas is to follow a gluten-free diet for a week order and eat gluten free options when eating out.

Now that I’ve declared my credentials, I can say with impunity that Adele’s Café is a great place to try this out. The fantastic slogan “We love coeliacs!” is true, not least because Adele, the owner’s eponymous daughter, is coeliac, hence the café’s ethos.

Adele’s Café has a really pleasant atmosphere with tasteful colour scheme and collection of pretty china, teapots and cakestands that makes eating there even more special. There is a variety of artwork on the walls for sale as well as crafts, cards, preserves, jewellery and even a poetry pamphlet (okay, it’s mine!).

Of course, surroundings are nothing without good food and I can vouch for that too, being one of the growing band of regular customers who enjoy delicious filled wraps, scones, hot rolls, a range of teas and quality Artisan Roast coffee. Saving the best for last, there is a truly scrumptious (small letters so no copyright!) range of cakes like cup cakes, carrot, chocolate and pear or chocolate orange tart.

This is a real wee gem in a growing area that offers individual attention in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and with food at affordable prices. Whether or not you have a gluten intolerance, Adele’s Café is a lovely place to eat and to be.
