The St James Centre is an early North American style shopping mall at the East end of Princes Street and top of Leith Walk. It is opposite the Vue Omni Cinema, by the busy Leith St road and St James roundabout.

The main draw here is the huge department store John Lewis. The St James Centre and nearby New St. Andrew's House, often dubbed "Edinburgh's Ugliest Building," are slated for demolition as part of an improvement of the city centre. It is expected to remain a major retail shopping area that, to quote from Council literature, "will make a positive contribution to the character and appearance of the surrounding area."
