Under new management in 2010, the City Cafe has taken on a Fifties American diner theme complete with jukebox and kids' activities. Open late.
During the Edinburgh Fringe, has hosted a series of Free Fringe shows with Laughing Horse.

The city cafe has reliably good barista-made coffees and the diner layout with enclosed booths, as well as the Old Town location, make this a good place for tête-à-têtes during the day, while at night this remains a perennially trendy spot for all the young pretty ones. Food is fairly standard burgers and sandwiches. Some veggie options also and some interesting import beers
