Event details

Studies suggest that today's children have significantly less outdoor playtime than previous generations. National Playday, held during the height of Summer, is an initiative to encourage kids to get outside and play more.

Edinburgh’s Grassmarket is transformed each year into a giant children’s play area with pop-up play activities including a giant sand pit, water play, magic potions, cardboard city, play pod, wheeled play, parachute games, play for babies, giant games and more..

The Grassmarket's different play zones are aimed at encouraging free, unstructured fun for young children whether it be water play, sand play, active play, intuitive play, creative play, or natural play.

The event is organised as part of the City of Edinburgh Council's play strategy to highlight the benefits of imaginative play to parents and communities.
