Christmas, or Xmas for non-believers, used to be a quiet period in Edinburgh. It's less so now, although (Edinburgh's Hogmanay aside) it's still not quite as mad as the hurlyburly of the Edinburgh Festival in August.

Prepare to be mesmerised by the uncanny illusionists from Edinburgh Young Carers in this free exhibition.

The New Year Sprint is an open 110m race, with a handicap start, that has taken place around New Year's Day annually since 1870. This year is the 150th anniversary year, and will see professional and amateur sprinters compete for a £8000 first prize, double the normal prize amount. The Sprint is part of a series of open, ladies, and youth races taking place over a distance of 60 metres up to 4 furlongs (approx 800 metres).

As in previous years, the 2018 Torchlight Procession opens the annual Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations with around 8,000 torchbearers creating a "river of fire" down the Royal Mile. The previous year saw around 30,000 people come out for the event.

Traditionally, Hogmanay is marked in Scotland with friends and first footing at the strike of midnight in the New Year.
