Description

The midnight fireworks display is set to erupt again above Edinburgh Castle as the clocks strike midnight on 1st January 2024.

The Midnight Moment - as the fireworks display is called - included a crowd light component in 2023 using flashing LED wristbands in the Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party arena on West side of Princes Street.

The crowd counts down in unison, then as the bells announce the start of a new day, a new month, and a new year, the fireworks explode above Edinburgh Castle.

Thousands gather below the castle, many at the Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party on Princes Street and the Concert in the Gardens, for this annual display which can be seen from vantage points across the city.

Following the fireworks, revellers across the country lock arms to sing Auld Lang Syne.

As Edinburgh's Hogmanay builds to the midnight bells, you can often hear mini "countdown fireworks" will fire off at 9pm, 10pm, and 11pm on New Year's Eve, building to the major, climactic fireworks display at the turn of the New Year.

Viewing the fireworks

Revellers with tickets to the Concert in the Gardens are directly under the display in West Princes Street Garden.

Calton Hill provides a longer range view of the Hogmanay Street Party and fireworks at midnight. Calton Hill has also been used as a launch pad for the midnight fireworks.

There are many good viewing points around the city, but other places include Waverley Bridge (some spots  have trees), Castle Street, The Mound, and for longer range views, Arthur's Seat (top of Holyrood Park) and Inverleith Park

Hogmanay Fireworks over the years

In 2018-2019, Hogmanay organisers introduced a specially created soundtrack for the Fireworks display, by German techno-marching band Meute.

Mark Ronson provided the 2019-2010 soundtrack for the accompanying fireworks display.

Edinburgh's Hogmanay organisers introduced the on-the-hour, "Countdown" Fireworks displays in 2012/2013.

In 2019/2020, organisers streamed the fireworks as part of Edinburgh's Hogmanay live online show.

The Hogmanay Fireworks were cancelled in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 due to pandemic restrictions.
