Saturday, July 15, 2017 - 1:00pm - 4:00pm

The free Mardi Gras, part of the Edinburgh Jazz Festival, launches Edinburgh's Festival season with the sounds of New Orleans and trad styled jazz in the street.

In the past, the Jazz Festival's opening weekend event started with a Parade which saw performers dance from City Chambers, down Victoria Street, to the Old Town bars and cafes of the Grassmarket. The streets are still busy for the trad jazz flavoured sounds from the various stages, but the Mardi Gras is now more of a warm-up for the following day's Edinburgh Carnival, which includes a Parade down the Mound and music and dance in West Princes Street Gardens as well as a music, dance and carnival programme in the Grassmarket.

Bands performing in Mardi Gras 2017 include:

  • USF JAZZTET: young band from the University of Florida – fast-paced modern jazz
  • Rumba De Bodas: high-energy, latin-swing band mixed with upbeat ska rhythms
  • Swing’It Disney: Norwegian dixieland band
  • Lorna Reid: jazz diva singing the classic American songbook
  • Jim Petrie’s Diplomats of Jazz: authentic and hot traditional music from the Crescent City Brass
  • Gumbo: brass band playing jazz with a distinctly New Orleans flavour
  • DopeSickFly: funk rock, acid jazz fusion
  • Viper Swing: hot gypsy jazz: fiery manouche guitars, high-flying violin and gravelly vocals
  • DopeSickFly: Freddie King – hip, compelling baritone voice delivering bebop, ballads and blues
