Potential Difference is an exhibition organised by Karen Halliday(see image , a Reader at Edinburgh University , the exhibition aims to examine socio-cultural aspects of science, with a focus on gender, an issue that is still a barrier to the career progression and optimisation of scientific potential in the UK. The project provides a landscape for postgraduate students to explore the impact of culture on our perceptions and expectations of female scientists. It also creates a unique and stimulating environment for cross-disciplinary interaction between early career scientists, archivists and professional artists.
The exhibition aims to generate examples of female role models to inspire the next generation of scientists; showcase leading biomedical and biological research produced by University of Edinburgh scientists and create an historical archive that captures a transect of international research spearheaded by female scientists
The event will provide an active learning resource that opens discourse on gender parity in Science and exposes some of common misconceptions that envelope female researchers as well as promoting interdisciplinary interaction between early career scientists and artists.
The Exhibition launch is on Friday 10th April at 6 pm 2015 at The Royal Society of Edinburgh and the opening address is by Professor Alice Brown CBE, RSE, Chair of the Scottish Funding Council with a further event at The Scottish Parliament, 12th May 2015 with MSP Kezia Dugdale.
