Edinburgh Soup teams up with Firstport to support local social enterprise start-ups

Edinburgh Soup, the innovative live music and fundraising night, based on the original successful Detroit SOUP founded in the Detroit’s Mexicantown in 2010, has teamed up with social enterprise charity Firstport to offer new social start-ups a helping hand, with an exciting special event at Assembly Roxy this October.

The idea of Edinburgh Soup is simple. Guests donate a minimum of £5. They get locally-made food (including soup of course!) along with great new live music, but, most importantly, they get to hear from Edinburgh-based projects that need their help. Each project does a simple pitch and at the end, everyone votes for the idea they like best, and the winning project gets the pot of donations.

This time the projects will be specially selected new social enterprises and the pot of potential investment will be boosted with funds from Firstport, whose business is to support individuals with great business ideas that benefit people, communities and the environment. They’re adding 2 prizes of £500 into the pot on top of £300 donation by Edinburgh tour company Rabbie’s Trail Burners

Completely non-profit, Edinburgh Soup was set up in October 2015 by promoters Phil Bolger and Robert Peacock, was the first night of its kind in Scotland. Since then, it has established itself on the live music circuit, to date having raised over £7000 for the likes of the Grassmarket Community Project, Venture Scotland and Comas, the charity behind the Serenity Cafe near Holyrood in the Old Town.

“We’re delighted to be working with Firstport on this edition of Soup,” says Peacock. “Soup is all about the community coming together to do something good, and if we can help a new project get off the ground with Firstport’s help then so much the better.”

Headliners for Edinburgh Soup 8 will be Supa and Da Kryptonites, a 9-piece Funk, Ska, Reggae, Soul, Hip-Hop, Swing and Grime Band who were Winners of the Best Unsigned Band Competition 2015 by The Sunday Herald in Association with XFM & The Wickerman Festival and STV's Ones to Watch For 2016.
