The now prestigious Scottish Arts Club - EdinburghGuide.com Fringe Award for Scottish Drama is now in its fourth year. Its purpose is to celebrate worthy contributions to Scottish drama that are brave, challenging and engaging. Previous winners have been 1000 Paper Cranes from Catherine Wheels, The Static by Davey Anderson from Thickskin and Hela by Adura Odashile from Iron Oxide.
The very singular looking Award has acquired the pet name of the Flying Artichoke and will be awarded again this year at the annual Scottish Arts Club - Edinburgh post Fringe party to be held this year on 24 August.
Following a shortlist announcement in mid-August, the Award will be made and presented this year by Scottish writer and film maker Murray Grigor.
An artichoke may seem an odd choice of symbol but it is a variety of thistle so not as strange as it may appear! While the actual statue stays at the Arts Club, a silkscreen version original bearing the winner’s name is kept by winners, each made by Edinburgh sculptor Duncan Robertson.
The 2014 judges are Joyce Caplan, Paul Fitzpatrick, John Scott Moncrieff, Liz Smith, and Chair Catherine Robins, with contributions from Irene Brown who is joining the judging panel to represent EdinburghGuide.com.
Arts administration is provided this year by student Annie Gannon.
