Gaelic Whisky Galore - Uisge-Beatha Gu Leòr - Touring Scotland in Spring 2015

A new Gaelic, stage adaptation of Compton MacKenzie's story Whisky Galore/Uisge-Beatha Gu Leòr is coming to Edinburgh this Spring. The play is a joint venture that combines the talents of The National Theatre of Scotland (NTS), Robhanis, the new Gaelic language theatre company, and A Play, A Pie and A Pint.

The play has been adapted for the stage by Gaelic playwright and writer Iain Finlay Macleod from the original novel by Compton MacKenzie. It was based on the true story of the S.S Politician and its wrecking on the Hebridean island of Eriskay.

MacLeod’s adaptation is set on the present day island of Todday. His modern re-telling of this charming comedy that was made famous by the 1949 Ealing film features a host of colourful characters, heart-warming stories and of course - whisky galore! Adult audience members will be offered a dram courtesy of Skye company Praban na Linne – The Gaelic Whiskies as part of the evening’s or lunchtime’s entertainment.

A programme of Whisky Galore related events will run alongside the tour including screenings of the 1949 classic film Whisky Galore at Glasgow Film Theatre, Edinburgh's Filmhouse and the Eden Court Cinema, Inverness, with each followed by a post film discussion.

In Glasgow and Edinburgh, these programmes will be led by NTS Artistic Director Laurie Sansom along with journalist and film critic Hannah McGill. Roger Hutchinson, author of Polly, The True Story Behind Whisky Galore will take part in post-show discussions in Skye, Eriskay and Glasgow.

The five handed 50 minute long piece will be directed by Guy Hollands who has experience in directing Gaelic theatre with work from Calum MacKinnon and Seonag Monk.

This World Premiere of Whisky Galore/Uisge-Beatha Gu Leòr marks the launch of Lewis based Robhanis and will be the NTS’ most fully-realised Gaelic language theatre production to date.

It will be performed almost entirely in Gaelic, with English surtitles for non-Gaelic speaking audiences.

The production will tour village halls and art centres across Scotland. (see full list below)
