National Theatre brings new production of Hedda Gabler to Edinburgh

October may seem a long way away, but theatre calendars are already prepared for treats ahead. This October will see the National Theatre bring its sell out production at its Lyttelton Theatre of Ibsen’s’ classic Hedda Gabler to Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre as part of its UK tour. Beginning at Theatre Royal Plymouth, the tour will go to Edinburgh, Leicester, Salford, Norwich, Hull, Aberdeen, Northampton, Wolverhampton, Nottingham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Milton Keynes, where it finishes on 3 March 2018.

This new version of Ibsen’s masterpiece has behind it two Olivier and Tony Award winners in the form of playwright Patrick Marber and director Ivo van Hove, who made his National Theatre debut with Hedda Gabler which runs in repertoire at the Lyttelton Theatre until 21 March 2017. His acclaimed production of A View from the Bridge recently played to sold out houses at the Young Vic, in the West End and on Broadway.

While casting and further tour venues are to be announced, we do know that the Associate Director for the tour is Jeff James; set and lighting design is by Jan Versweyveld; costume design by An D’Huys and sound by Tom Gibbons.

Patrick Marber said, “It has been a huge honour to work with the great Ivo van Hove on this version of Hedda Gabler at the National Theatre. I am thrilled that this tour will enable more people to see his incredible production.”

Dates Tuesday 17 to Saturday 21 October 2017
