Hollywood Park Road Closures For Bonfire Night

By edg - Posted on 03 November 2011

Holyrood Park will once again be closed to traffic on Bonfire Night as a special safety measure. Park roads will be closed to traffic from 6pm to 11pm on Friday, 4th November and Saturday 5th November.

The park ranger service and the police will also patrol the area throughout the evening. The move was introduced to help avoid wildfires which can be caused by fireworks.

Martin Gray Historic Scotland's Visitor Services Manager at Holyrood Park said: “Bonfire Night is an opportunity for people to have fun, but it is important that that is done safely. With an area such as the park, which covers many hundreds of metres, it is very easy for fireworks, if not properly supervised, to cause a lot of damage. This year we’ll be working once again with police and the fire service to help reduce the risk to the park, and would encourage people to attend organised fire work displays, for their own safety and that of the environment around them.”

The park, which is managed by Historic Scotland, is one of Edinburgh’s most important historic attractions and wildlife havens, and is home to many species of plants and wildlife. They are often the first to be affected by fire, whilst it can also damage the archaeology beneath.
