About the venue

The distinctive turreted building of George Heriot's School (aka Heriots) first opened its doors to pupils in 1659. Centrally located in the Lauriston area, it's within striking distance of Edinburgh's Old Town, with Edinburgh Castle directly to its North and The Meadows greenspace to its South.

Heriot's is an independent co-educational day school for children between 3 and 18, from in and around the city of Edinburgh.

The school rents out its facilities for a variety of private and corporate events, from weddings (in the school chapel) to film shoots. The BBC is among the organisations that have used the extensive grounds and facilities, for its Edinburgh Fringe shows.

Harry Potter fans have speculated that Heriot's is Hogwarts, although author J.K. Rowling has said it was not a direct inspiration for her fantastical school for wizards.

Many of Heriot's sports activities take place at Goldenacre Playing Fields in the Inverleith area of Edinburgh.
