National Playday in the Grassmarket
Edinburgh’s Grassmarket will be transformed into a giant children’s play area today (3 August) to mark national Playday.
The family-friendly event is designed to promote the importance of outdoor play for young children and encourage adults to get involved too.
Six Playing Zones
The Grassmarket will feature six different play zones – all aimed at encouraging free, unstructured fun for young children:
- water play
- sand play
- active play
- intuitive play
- creative play
- natural play
The event has been organised as part of the City of Edinburgh Council's play strategy to highlight the benefits of imaginative play to parents and communities.
Councillor Marilyne MacLaren, Education Leader, said: “Play is such an important part of any child's development so our now very successful Playday provides a fantastic opportunity to celebrate it and promote its many benefits.
“Outdoor play is vital for any child, providing stimuli to learn and the health benefits of being in the open air. The range of play opportunities on offer is always quite remarkable and gives parents and carers some great ideas of things to do with their youngsters".
