Edinburgh Christmas Light Night
Edinburgh's Christmas 2016 season launches on the second last Sunday of November, with the first in a series of Christmas light nights.
Choirs from across Scotland including the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Royal Scottish National Orchestra Junior Chorus and Edinburgh's Got Soul will perform for an anticipated 20,000 strong crowd. This year the Street of Light, a series of illuminated arches, will be at the west end of George Street as part of Light Night. The acts will perform on a stage under its lights, hosted by Forth One DJ Arlene Stuart.
In 2016, the 60,000 bulb Street of Light corridor turns on at its new West George Street location today.
The Christmas Tree on the Mound, a gift to the City of Edinburgh Council from Hordaland, will also be switched on as part of the Night Light celebrations.
Following the switch on of the lights - usually attended by the Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh and Deputy Convener of Hordaland County Council, Norway, there is a firework display (at 4.50pm). Hordland provides the iconic Norwegian Christmas tree on The Mound.
During the day, there are also Christmas food markets and the pop-up ice rinks in East Princes Street Gardens (TBC) and St Andrew Square. There are a number of smaller Christmas Light Nights in other Edinburgh areas in the days following the main city centre Light Night event.
