Description

The Flag Institute is a members’ association and UK-registered charity, founded in 1971, to study and promote flags and flag flying or vexillology.

The Flag Institute Winter Conference in Edinburgh is the first conference in Scotland, its first 2-day conference, and first collaboration with The Heraldry Society of Scotland.

The conference includes talks on Scottish flags, heraldry, and history, exclusive visits, and our Presidents' Drinks and Dinner are all on the programme.

Everyone welcome – FI members, HSS members, and visitors alike.

Day 1 opens at the Royal Scots Club at 11am on Saturday 18 November with Councillor Robert Aldridge, The Rt Hon Lord Provost of Edinburgh. Also confirmed on the Day 1 programme are Sheriff George Way of Plean, Carrick Pursuivant; Lt Col Ian Shepherd; and speakers from the Flag Institute, the Scottish Flag Trust, and Ashfield (Trades House, Edinburgh). Day 1 concludes at the Royal Scots Club with the Presidents' Drinks Reception and Dinner, with guest-of-honour The Right Honourable the Lord Lyon King of Arms, Dr Joseph J. Morrow.

Further details of the conference presentations will follow.

On Sunday 19 November, Day 2 opens at 10.30am at Trades House, where curator Ian Richardson will give us a tour and presentation. We then continue to St Giles Cathedral to view its collection of banners and enjoy an exclusive tour of the Thistle Chapel, led by Elizabeth Roads, Secretary of the Order of the Thistle.
