Description

Experience the beauty and drama of Bach’s St John Passion in the inspiring surroundings of Canongate Kirk in the heart of the Old Town this Easter.

First performed on Good Friday, 1724 in the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, Bach’s Johannes-passion is one of the great masterpieces of the 18th. Century. Its pictorial vividness and tragic vision endures to this day.

Singing the role of the Evangelist is Joshua Ellicott, a tenor of great distinction, who has worked with some of the finest musicians of his generation, including The Sixteen, Concentus Musicus Wien, Boston Handel and Haydn Society and The King’s Consort. Joshua has developed a particular affinity with the works of Bach, Handel and Monteverdi and has a particular love for the role of the Evangelist in Bach’s Passions.

Much loved in Edinburgh operatic and choral circles, Ivor Klayman takes the role of Christus, with other parts being sung by Catriona Hewitson, Frances McCafferty, Sam Jenkins and Nicholas Uglow.

Les Shankland conducts the Chapter House Singers and Orchestra, led by Ruth Slater, with John Kitchen playing continuo.

Join us for what promises to be a wonderful evening of drama and music this Passiontide!
