Edinburgh Council to Trial Social Media On Election Night

Edinburgh City Council's media office is going social as Edinburgh's votes are counted tomorrow night for the UK General Election.

The election counts for the capital’s five Westminster constituencies is taking place at Meadowbank stadium and it is expected to be a close-run thing.

At the last general election in 2005 Labour won four of Edinburgh's five seats with the Lib Dems John Barrett comfortably taking Edinburgh West. The Lib Dems are also in strong contention this time around in Edinburgh North and Leith (Mark Lazarowicz's seat) and Edinburgh South (held by outgoing Nigel Griffiths).

The city blog says there will be regular updates via twitter, Flickr, and its blogs with news of how the counts are progressing and other items from the frontline. It includes geocoded tweets ("tweets that are tagged with geographical information – in other words, you’ll be able to view updates for each constituency on a map," says the site.)

However, there wont be any real time discussion. The council also warns, "Finally, this is a first for the Council and – with it being a general election – there’s no way we can do a dress rehearsal! So, please bear with us if anything doesn’t quite work as you expect."
