The distribution of Edinburgh's five Westminster seats remained unchanged after votes were counted early this morning, with Labour holding its four Edinburgh seats and the Liberal Democrats holding its one seat in Edinburgh West.

However, there was a tight race for Edinburgh South with Labour's Ian Murray holding off the Lib Dems Fred Mackintosh by a mere 316 votes. Murray won 15,215 votes to Mackintosh's 14,899 (34.7% vs. 34%).

Labour's Mark Lazarowicz held off the Lib Dem's contender Kevin Lang in Edinburgh North and Leith by a margin of 1724 votes (17,740 vs 16,016 votes or 37.5% vs 33.8% of the vote).

As expected Chancellor Alistair Darling held Edinburgh South West, to win with 42.8% of the vote, an increase of 3%.

Sheila Gilmore comfortably took Edinburgh East with 17,314 votes (43.4% of the vote), more than twice the number of votes won by the SNP's George Kerevan.

The new Liberal Democrat candidate for Edinburgh West, Michael Crockart, saw a big chunk of party support disappear - with a 13.6% drop in the Lib Dem's vote share - but his tally of 16,684 votes (35.9% of total votes) still put him well clear of Labour's resurgent candidate Cameron Day who polled 12,881 (27.7% of the vote).
